Monophasic sleeping is making me tired!
Just a quick glance at my first three monophasic nights after two weeks on Everyman3 –> I cannot compare the zeo data to “Pre-Polyphasic” sleeps, since I only purchased it recently but I think I sleep pretty much the same as before the experiment.
And I have the same “energy curve” during the day as before (did not track this so far though) with two “lows” in the morning hours at about 9 to 10 and one in the evenening from 5 to 8. Overall I am certainly not fitter than during everyman – au contraire.
Looking back at my just finished attempt at everyman3 (sleeping 3 hours per night and
taking three 20 minutes naps a day), I am still astonished how very easy and smooth I adapted to this schedule. I expected (for good reasons) at least frequent periods of heavy drowsiness and sleep deprivation. Come on: I only slept for 4 hours each day.
But no: I tracked every sleeping and waking hour and there definitly was almost no sleep deprivation at all. Now I am specualting if this has something to do with the uberman experiment I did three weeks earlier.
Can this be a kind of training effect?
This was the icing on the cake. An almost artistic, poetical application of everyman3 in unusual circumstances. And a much much better end than the one on uberman, three weeks ago (Uberman / Day 14 – What an unworthy end).
What happened? It was high time again for me to visit my two elder sons who live near the city of Stuttgart, some 500km from here. Normally it takes me 4 hours by car taking the Autobahn, but I decided to go by motorbike, avoid the Autobahn completly and drive over land instead. And being a polyphaser, I went by night…
Polyphasic sleeping is certainly not enough to prevent stress due to a lack of time. The end of two of my projects approaching, both customers come up with last minutes issues. This caused me to miss another nap (not intentionally – simply forgot it) which is not good as you can see from the level of “alertness” in the chart below.
I will really need to pump out the first version of my app asap.
I have to write this up from memory, because I found no time to write this article (worked this night due to an upcoming deadline within one of my projects – bad management on my part).
I tracked my naps and alertness levels though – this part comes quite naturally now, I think I even could switch off my hourly “beep” which reminds me to log how tired I feel.

Those of you who followed this little diary so far know that I aimed for about two weeks of doing this schedule. Not more. Well the end of this period is near and still I am missing the feeling that I have achieved something special. This is still way too easy.
Hooray! Finally at least a bit of sleep deprivation. Had real trouble to get started this morning. It took the 11:30 nap to get all systems running finally. Not really tough but at least a bit of a inconveniance at least
This really was a technical problem. No really. I changed my alarm and relied on zeo to wake me (smart alarm!) but the iPad was set to silent. Damn. 1:20 oversleep. New negative record. As you can see, I even woke up at 07:00 (kids arriving probably) but cannot remember it – kids are no alarm, so no reason to trouble my nap with it.
First moment I thought it quite amusing.
My mother (66 years old, I am 38) who happens to be on facebook commented on one of my posts where I explained that to adapt, you have to put your brain into a kind of “survival mode” first.
Her comment was along the lines. “You seem to have not many things that are of vital importance to you then. Set priorities. Shorter is not always better. Your Mama”.
Second week started. I have still difficulties to get out of bed after my core nap, but this time it was a bit special because I was out of rythm from the wedding of my brother in law.
